Our central purpose is to ensure that all children at Lea Manor High School achieve the highest standards of which they are capable. These standards will apply to all that children do, whether in the classroom, on the sports field, in concert or on stage, or in the extensive range of other opportunities we offer to students at all stages of their education.
Our curriculum aims should enable all young people to become:
- Successful students, who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve.
- Independent learners who have developed a range of flexible thinking skills which they can transfer successfully to different learning situations and the world of work
- Imaginative, creative and reflective in their learning
- Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives. They develop a range of social skills and can interact with people of varying backgrounds and cultures
- Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society and allows them to uphold the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law and individual liberty. They will also make contributions to our local community through school based and local activities
- Tolerant and respectful of those who have different faiths and beliefs
Central to that purpose is an ordered, tolerant and caring community that recognises the diverse talents and abilities of each individual. Thus, we aim to provide a secure and disciplined environment where staff and students can work together ensuring that learning is always placed at the core of everything we do. The curriculum aims to build on young people's experiences in the primary phase and prepare them to succeed in the next stage of their learning journey. Our curriculum reflects values in our society that promote personal development, equality of opportunity, economic wellbeing, a healthy and just democracy, and a sustainable future. It will allow our students to be prepared for life in modern Britain.
To achieve our aims we offer:

The curriculum at Key Stage 3
Our curriculum in Year 7 to Year 9 is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to prepare them for progression to Year 10 and Year 11 and their future.
The timetable is based on a 2 week cycle of 50 one hour periods, plus 20 minutes of tutor time each day. The table below is based on the 2 week cycle:
At Key Stage 3, there is a strong emphasis on the teaching of reading, writing communicating and mathematics (RWCM). Students are given well targeted intervention to give them the best possible chance of accessing the curriculum in its entirety as they progress through school. This support can take place in the classroom, 1-1, small group work and after school.
In Year 9, students are introduced to the Pathways process with their parents / carers, which informs and guides them on the choices they can make in Y10 and Y11. This includes a Careers Convention held at the school, a detailed interview with every student and their parent / carer, and a Pathways evening and comprehensive information booklet outlining the different pathways and subject choices.
The curriculum at key stage 4
When pupils move into Year 10, they follow a core curriculum for 60% of their timetable and choose four personalised choices based on their pathway, abilities and career aspirations.
The core curriculum is made up of 6 GCSEs: English Language, English Literature, Maths, Core Science, Additional Science and Religious Education. Two hours of Physical Education a week are also taught to all students, although there is no qualification associated with this entitlement.
Additionally to the core curriculum students choose 4 subjects for 40% of curriculum time from a range of GCSEs and BTECs. These are currently:
Triple Science GCSE, Art GCSE, Catering GCSE, Citizenship GCSE, Drama GCSE, DT Resistant Materials GCSE, DT Graphic Products GCSE, DT Food Products GCSE, French GCSE, Geography GCSE, Health and Social Care GCSE, History GCSE, Music GCSE, Music Technology BTEC, PE GCSE, Performing Arts BTEC, Spanish GCSE, and Sport Studies NCFE.
The KS4 curriculum has been carefully designed to ensure that all students leave Lea Manor with numerous choices available to them. The majority of students will successfully complete 10 GCSEs, this places them in a position of strength when choosing and applying for courses to study during the next stage of their learning. For those students that a curriculum offer of 10 GCSEs is inappropriate they will be offered a supported curriculum that suits their needs. These students will study a range of GCSEs that are appropriate for their ability and will receive extra support and guidance. If appropriate they will also study a City and Guilds course that appropriately prepares them for future study and the world of work.
The curriculum is constantly under review to ensure it meets national guidance and the needs and aspirations of all students.
